We’re going to take the entire night to practice our software development skills by practicing test-driven development in pairs. This is a different sort of event. It is hands-on so bring a laptop (more details below in the “What to Bring” section) and a healthy bit of curiosity.

 

Our goal is create a technology-agnostic user group for local Detroit software professionals who want to stay current in an industry in which there’s no way to stay totally current. The current plan is to have a healthy mix of hard and soft talks (tech vs. dev practices) as well as hands-on coding events from time to time.

Your goal is to create an application on any platform you choose (i.e. Website, Android, iOS, etc.) using our API. Applications will be judged by our panel. The team that creates the most creative and innovative application will be the first place winner, followed by a second and third place.

 

Does it have to be a software application? No! If your team has the resources to create a hardware solution, you’re welcome too! However, we cannot provide any tools or components to help you. If your team will need an oscilloscope, you will have to bring it yourself.

Scott Tobias will walk us through systemd, including what it is, who is adopting it, and why Linux Administrators need to know systemd (even if they don’t care for it). And if you’re not fully up to speed on System  V initialization he’ll also cover some of the differences between the two. You’ll also learn about Service Units – the  “basic” unit type,  Unit file configurationi, Systemctl – systemd’s Swiss Army Knife, and Journald / journalctl. Although he didn’t have a televised event to announce ‘the decision,’ he has gathered a vast collection of the real problems he has discovered in the majority of applications that he has tested. Reflected XSS, injection of all types, and privilege escalation are rampant, and that is only the beginning. What’s more, he hasn’t tested an application yet that had sufficient protection to keep him from breaking in and causing havoc. Come hear what they are, how they intersect with the OWASP Top 10, and what you can say to your developers to make the problems go away.

maker faire What would you build on a 40″ X 49″ trailer? Pitch your idea to your TechShop peers on July 16 and you could be selected for the 48-hour Make-a-Thon running at the shop the weekend before Maker Faire Detroit. Six people will be given a trailer and 48 hours to construct their mobile dream project. All projects will be exhibited at Maker Faire Detroit at the TechShop zone where the public will vote for their favorites. Results will be announced at TechShop Detroit’s post-Maker Faire open house on Saturday, August 1st.
