You finally connect with strong leaders, then watch them slow down, pull back, or accept other offers. It is easy to chalk that up to a hot market. Often, it is a sign that the experience from the candidate side is not landing.
At the executive level, candidates expect:
- A clear, credible story about where the company is headed
- Visibility into how decisions get made and who they will really work with
- A process that respects their time and confidentiality
If outreach feels generic, if the opportunity sounds like any other executive search, or if scheduling is chaotic, they will quietly move on. When your executive recruiting process does not give candidates context and predictability, they will decide you are not ready for them, even if the role itself is attractive.
This is one of the most common hiring red flags. You see late stage withdrawals, long gaps between steps, and feedback like “I am not sure they have alignment internally.”
